WELCOME TO WETHER'S FIELD!
Five years ago I had never heard of Packgoats. It was a rainy day in January as I was meandering through the Washington Sportsman’s Show in Puyallup, when I saw my first Packgoats. My first thoughts were, ‘that’s cute’ and ‘how quaint!’ I proceeded to walk on over to take a closer look at these interesting beasts of burden. After spending some time with the goats, and talking with members of the Evergreen Packgoat Club I soon realized that Packgoats are not just a novelty. Packgoats are a hearty and loyal trail companion that have distinct and desirable advantages over all other packstock. Learn More
WHAT IS GOAT PACKING?
What Is Goat Packing?
Goatpacking entails placing a pack on a goat and then embarking with this gentle creature carrying most of your gear. Not carrying as much on your back is an excellent way to enhance your outdoors experience. Goats are willing hiking companions and enjoy the company of people. Proper training is a primary key to successful goatpacking. Goats are intelligent and curious creatures but they need positive training to know what they are supposed to do for you on the trail. The more you work with your goat, the more bonded it becomes to you. Keeping a packgoat at home requires a time commitment with the reward being a less strenuous hike!
What Is A Pack Goat?
A pack goat is generally a wether (neutered male goat), but they can also be a doe (female goat) that is either dry (not in milk) or in milk. The breed of goat can be any variety of dairy goat, either purebred or crossbred.
